This is not a massive program. It is a bunch of small programs in communities in all 50 states. How do you get 60,000 unhoused veterans off the streets and into housing? 1 at a time!

- We do not want to be a huge fundraising operation. Click here to look up the number of VASH vouchers allocated for your area. Multiply that number times the average total for deposit and first month’s rent for your area. This would be the maximum amount needed to be raised for your area to fulfill all the vouchers.
- Fund the program.
- The same day we get the funding for your area we email your local HUD VASH case managers the online referral form. If there are any veterans waiting for deposits we will mail the check to the landlord the very same day! For example in Operation Houston the same day we got the funding TWO veteran families were approved.
According to HUD’s April 2012 VASH assessment, “Hands down, the most common obstacle faced by Veterans during the lease-up process as described by HUD-VASH sites is a lack of funds for security deposits and other move-in costs.” That document is here.
…then forgotten when they are home.

Quality Control
When the HUD-VASH case manager enters the referral online, the veteran family has already been completely screened through multiple layers of the Federal Government, Veterans Administration, Healthcare for Homeless Veterans, and HUD VASH for service record, homelessness, suitability for the program, acceptability of the housing to meet Section 8 guidelines, verified capacity to maintain that housing, and approved for continuing case management.
Any other screening we would do is redundant and wastes the veterans time, cell minutes, and bus fare. We trust the VASH Managers completely. Think about it, if they try to fudge things they will lose their job. We are not going to manage for exception. The veteran family has likely already waited weeks and is anxious to be housed TODAY. Even one more night on the streets or in a shelter is one too many.
